{"id":557,"date":"2018-08-29T14:00:37","date_gmt":"2018-08-29T21:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lightsondata.com\/?p=557"},"modified":"2020-07-15T15:54:48","modified_gmt":"2020-07-15T22:54:48","slug":"data-governance-maturity-models-stanford","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lightsondata.com\/data-governance-maturity-models-stanford\/","title":{"rendered":"Stanford data governance maturity model"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As an educator, speaker, and data governance professional I sometimes get asked,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;How can you measure the effectiveness of your data governance program?&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>From my experience, there are two main ways to do so:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Through a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightsondata.com\/data-governance-scorecard-free-template\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">data governance scorecard<\/a><\/li>\n<li>By evaluating it against a data governance maturity model<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This series of articles is focusing on the second option by offering an introduction to some of the existing maturity models.\u00a0 So far I&#8217;ve covered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightsondata.com\/data-governance-maturity-models-ibm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IBM data governance maturity model<\/a>\u00a0and it makes most sense to follow it with Stanford&#8217;s as it follows the same maturity levels as IBM&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<h2>Stanford Data Governance Maturity Model<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Overview<\/strong>: Developed in 2011 by Stanford University\u2019s Data Governance Office,\u00a0the model was adapted from other models, such as IBM&#8217;s and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Capability_Maturity_Model\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CMM&#8217;s<\/a>. Technical metadata describes data elements and other IT assets as well as their use, representation, context and interrelations. Business metadata answers who, what, where, when, why and how for users of the data and other IT assets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The project grouping measure how effectively data governance concepts are applied in the course of funded projects (Stanford, 2011):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stewardship:<\/strong> The formalization of accountability for the definition, usage, and quality standards of specific data assets within a defined organizational scope.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Data Quality:<\/strong> The continuous process for defining the parameters for specifying acceptable levels of data quality to meet business needs, and for ensuring that data quality meets these levels.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Master Data:<\/strong> Business-critical data that is highly shared across the organization.
