Compliance:<\/strong> The methodology by which risks are identified, qualified, and quantified, avoided, accepted, mitigated or transferred out.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Value Creation:<\/strong>\u00a0The process by which data assets are qualified and quantified to enable the business to maximize the value created by data assets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Organizational Structures &amp; Awareness:<\/strong>\u00a0Description of the level of mutual responsibility between the business and IT, and the recognition of the fiduciary responsibility to govern data at different levels of management.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Policy:<\/strong>\u00a0A description of the desired organizational behavior(s).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stewardship:<\/strong>\u00a0A quality control discipline designed to ensure custodial care of data for asset enhancement, risk management, and organizational control.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Data Quality Management:<\/strong>\u00a0Methods to measure, improve and certify the quality and integrity of production, test and archival data.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Information Lifecycle Management:<\/strong>\u00a0A systematic policy-based approach to information collection, use, retention, and deletion.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Information Security &amp; Privacy:<\/strong>\u00a0The policies, practices and controls used by the organization to mitigate risk and protect data assets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Data Architecture:<\/strong>\u00a0The architectural design of structured and unstructured data systems and applications that enable data availability and distribution to appropriate users.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Classification &amp; Metadata:<\/strong>\u00a0The methods and tools used to create common semantic definitions for business and IT terms, data models, data types, and repositories. Metadata that bridge human and computer understanding.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Audit Information, Logging &amp; Reporting:<\/strong>\u00a0The organizational processes for monitoring and measuring the data value, risks, and efficacy of governance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are some of the characteristics of each level:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Level 1: Initial<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Little or no data processes or controls in place<\/li>\n<li>Silo-ed and ad-hoc approach for managing data<\/li>\n<li>Data management is very reactive<\/li>\n<li>No formalized tracking or management of data overall<\/li>\n<li>Budget and schedule of data project is usually exceeded<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Checkout this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightsondata.com\/data-governance-maturity-model\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online course on Data Governance Maturity Model(s)<\/a> to learn all there is to know about them, the best practices and pitfalls on selecting and using them, and so much more.<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Level 2: Managed<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is awareness of the importance of data<\/li>\n<li>Invested in several projects such as modeling of basic infrastructure or documentation of data processes<\/li>\n<li>Some repeatable processes and automation occurring, but not for all projects<\/li>\n<li>Data-related regulatory controls are documented and available<\/li>\n<li>More focus is spent on metadata<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Level 3: Defined<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Data policies are better defined and unambiguous<\/li>\n<li>Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightsondata.com\/data-stewardship-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">data stewardship<\/a> is implemented<\/li>\n<li>Technology is used to better manage data<\/li>\n<li>Data integration is on the road-map and leveraged<\/li>\n<li>Data management practices are becoming widely shared and understood<\/li>\n<li>Risk assessment for data quality and master data management becomes part of the usual project methodology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Level 4: Quantitatively managed<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Data governance structure is at the enterprise level<\/li>\n<li>Quantitative quality goals are set for data processes and maintenance<\/li>\n<li>Enterprise data models are documented and made available<\/li>\n<li>Any project follows data governance principles<\/li>\n<li>Performance is measured consistently against stated goals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Level 5: Optimizing<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cost of data management is easier to managed and reduced<\/li>\n<li>Processes are automated and streamlined<\/li>\n<li>Data management is consistent, rigorous, and adopted enterprise-wide<\/li>\n<li>Data governance is second nature and is a collective effort<\/li>\n<li>ROI for a data project is consistently evaluated and tracked<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Take away:<\/strong>\u00a0Each one of the 11 separate domains are individually assessed and placed within its own level, which is great as you can start with the one better suiting your business needs. Level 2 is\u00a0where most organizations are when they start a data governance program.
