What if\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\">GDPR is not a concern to your organization? Some would argue that it\u00a0 is, but regardless, I believe data classification is still a recommended project every organization should complete. Why? Strategic Plan: The Customer Trust And Privacy Playbook <\/em><\/a>by Fatemeh Khatibloo <em>May 14, 2018, <\/em>your data should be evaluated across three dimensions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Identifiability: how easily can this data be used to identify an individual?<\/li>\n<li>Sensitivity: how much damage could be done if this data reached the wrong hands?<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Scarcity: how readily available is this data?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Based on this, I would argue that data and information can be <strong>classified<\/strong> into <strong>3 main groups<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<h4>1. Public<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Definition:<\/strong> Data and information that may be freely released to the public<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Information posted on public websites<\/li>\n<li>Press releases<\/li>\n<li>Research publications<\/li>\n<li>Product data sheets<\/li>\n<li>Job postings<\/li>\n<li>Business contact information<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Considerations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Little or no controls are required to protect the confidentiality of public data<\/li>\n<li>Minor or no impact of unauthorized data disclosure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>2. Sensitive<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Definition:<\/strong> Data and information that is not protected by law or industry regulations<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Financial information<\/li>\n<li>Restricted circulation library journals<\/li>\n<li>Medical or research information of a non-personal nature<\/li>\n<li>Strategic planning documents<\/li>\n<li>Emails or documents that do not include confidential data<\/li>\n<li>Employee handbooks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Considerations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most of this data is for internal use only<\/li>\n<li>A reasonable level of security controls should be implemented and applied to this data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>3. Confidential<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Definition:<\/strong> Data and information that is protected by law, industry or government regulation, or confidentiality and contractual agreements from unauthorized access, use or destruction<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightsondata.com\/3-ways-you-can-leverage-emr-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Health record information<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Biometric data<\/li>\n<li>Payment Card Industry information (credit card numbers, names, pins, expiry dates)<\/li>\n<li>Personal contact data<\/li>\n<li>Customer database<\/li>\n<li>Bank account information<\/li>\n<li>Student IDs and grades<\/li>\n<li>Authentication data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Considerations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Notice will need to be provided to the individual if information is inappropriately accessed<\/li>\n<li>Unauthorized access might need to be reported to external bodies such as the government<\/li>\n<li>A high level of security controls should be implemented and applied to this data<\/li>\n<li>Some organizations choose to split this category into 2: confidential data and top secret data; Top secret data would include things such as trade secrets or government classified information<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Examples of data classifications from other organizations<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/709003\/May-2018_Government-Security-Classifications.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UK Government Security Classification<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/adminguide.stanford.edu\/chapter-6\/subchapter-3\/policy-6-3-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stanford Classification of Information<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umass.edu\/it\/support\/security\/data-classification-umass-amherst\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Massachusetts Data Classification<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Depending on your industry you might define these classes differently and you might have more groups or even subgroups. What different classes does your organization use?
