There is also an argument to be made that everyone is a data steward, but for the scope of this article I would like to argue there are 4 different types of data stewards for which your own organization might have different titles or variants for.<\/p>\n<h2>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Data object data steward<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Description:<\/strong> This role manages reference data and attributes of one business data entity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Synonym<\/strong>: Domain data steward<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong> Customer data steward. R<span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\">eference data and attributes managed by this steward: company hierarchy, address, industry code, contact information, finance data.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Key characteristics and considerations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The role needs to reaches across functional lines and needs\u00a0\u00a0to establish a cross-department team of subject matter experts<\/li>\n<li>The most common types of stewardships, yet often most difficult to implement especially in decentralized organizations<\/li>\n<li>Support them by following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightsondata.com\/5-best-practices-for-managing-reference-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">best practices for managing reference data<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Requires strong executive sponsorship<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Business data steward<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Description:<\/strong> Manages the critical data, both reference and transactional, created or used by one business function.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Synonym:<\/strong> Functional data steward<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong> Sales or marketing data steward, business or data analyst<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key characteristics and considerations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They are key representatives in a specific business area that is responsible for quality, use, and meaning of that data in the organization<\/li>\n<li>One of the easiest functions to implement in a highly autonomous company<\/li>\n<li>Effectiveness can be more easily measured by a direct business unit process metric<\/li>\n<li>Gets challenging where the data is shared between several business units. This is where a centralized data governance organization is needed to intervene.
