Data profiling is usually done with the help of a tool, but on how we use the tool and how we interpret the results and derive meaning out of them is up to us.

Data profiling is performed using different types of analysis, such as:

Column profiling

This is where we look at each column in a table and draw some standard statistics on each column, such as:

Frequency distribution

Minimum and maximum values

Mean and median values

The column profiling also provides us with

A list of distinct values

Patterns

Other inferred metadata such as data type

Table profiling

The table profiling looks for the relationships and dependencies between the columns of a table. You can generally derive business rules from what you’re seeing as part of your table profiling exercise.

Cross-table profiling

The cross-table profiling analyzes the relationships between columns in different tables.
