Types of Pre-Attentive Attributes<\/strong><\/h2>\n

“A pre-attentive visual property is one which is processed in spatial memory without our conscious action. In essence it takes less than 500 milliseconds for the eye and the brain to process a pre-attentive property of any image.” – Read more from Interaction-Design.org<\/a><\/p>\n

1. Color<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hues and intensities are pre-attentively processed and can be used to separate visual elements from their surroundings. This saves the user from having to perform a visual search through data.<\/p>\n

2. Form<\/strong><\/p>\n

Form applies to a set of attributes such as orientation, shape, line length, line width, size, curvature, added marks, enclosure.<\/p>\n

3. Spatial Positioning<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are a few, but we care more about the 2D positioning. This is often the best way to deliver data that can be easily recognized and processed visually. It is particularly effective for quantitative data representations.<\/p>\n

4. Movement<\/strong><\/p>\n

Movement has two sub-attributes: motion and flicker. They can be used effectively to call someone\u2019s attention. However, care should always be taken when employing motion in information visualizations and other
