The maturity model can be a good tool for your data governance program to see where you are in your program\u2019s progression, it\u2019s a good informant to your data governance strategy and can help address some business needs. But it is just a tool, and because you have one doesn’t mean that your problems and challenges will magically go away. You still need the right people with skills and knowledge and support to act on this maturity model. This is something that management sometimes forgets when they purchase a tool, when they purchase the maturity model, that this is not the only thing that needs to be done to improve their data program. It’s just part of the puzzle.<\/li>\n
It’s a good comparison tool, but mostly against yourself. When you compare against others that are using it, you need to first ensure that they are using the same model and ideally you can identify the differences between both interpretations. <\/li>\n
Don’t forget to communicate. I always provide this takeaway and lesson learned for anything concerning data and especially data management and data governance programs. I think we don’t communicate enough and in order to raise awareness of the importance of data we need to communicate about it and same goes with these maturity models. Use those artifacts that they come with to communicate to your stakeholders where your programs are standing right now, why there needs to be investment in them to move them at a higher level, an then communicate and keep them in the loop with that progression. Of course, don’t forget to always tie them back to the business needs, the business goals, and at least for those major stakeholders show what’s in it for them. Why would they care that you are at a certain level? Make it
