Here are the sets of characteristics shared among maturity models:<\/p>\n<h4>1. Narrative<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Level characteristics &#8211; Regardless of the number of levels (1-4; 1-5; 0-5; etc.), each model has a set of characteristics for each level they provide. These are mostly qualitative.<\/li>\n<li>Recommendations &#8211; Each level can also come with a set of recommendations for managing the current situation, but also what to do in order to go to the next.<\/li>\n<li>Risks &amp; benefits &#8211; The risk and the benefits, pros and cons, are also present, but depending on the model, these are either explicit and they are stated out as such, or implicit and they need to be derived based on the narrative and description offered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>2. Domains<\/h4>\n<p>For each level you have characteristics that describe the same number of domains and sub-domains that the model is tracking. These are either:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Broad &#8211; Ex: Awareness, Tools, Technology, Data Stewardship<\/li>\n<li>Specific &#8211; Ex: Data Governance Authority, Business Glossary Adoption<\/li>\n<li>Singular &#8211; There is no more than one domain described, which is then usually Data Governance (as an example consistent with the scope of our course)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>3. Artifacts<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>The narrative &#8211; A document describing the overall model and the different characteristics of each level<\/li>\n<li>Assessment tool &#8211; Most often this consists of a survey, or an open ended matrix that you can compare your answers with the characteristics of the level you are at<\/li>\n<li>Scoreboard &#8211; A visualization in a matrix style, a dotting system, or a spider chart that showcase your baseline, current level, and future goal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another characteristic is that the models cannot be compared one to one. Besides being able to expect the above being available for each or most maturity models, you cannot compare the results obtained from one model with the results from another, even if they cover the same industry and have the same number of
